I think maybe I spend too much time looking at excel graphs.

Daily Photo: Oriole fanning
There are orioles everywhere out here. I had no idea. As a kid growing up in Kansas, I read about them but they were not native to the area. I was always fascinated by their basket nests that I saw in books. I’d seen the basket nests in the trees this spring for the first time and suspected that they were made by orioles, but it took a park display to prove to me.
The lighting in this one isn’t perfect, but I really liked the pose. And that brilliant orage is such a lovely color. Taken about 20 minutes after dawn.
Daily Photo: No pictures, please!
Let’s start this week off with some hilarity, shall we? (the title of this one just cracks me up)
So I went to Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday morning. When I left the house, it wasn’t my intention, but I couldn’t find the place I was trying to visit (Bobcat Ridge) so rather than turn around and get directions, I kept driving until I hit the road to Estes Park. From there, it was just a 45 minute hair-raising drive up the canyon and into the park.
Estes has some amazing views, but I am not much of a landscape photographer. I’m there for the animals. I saw exactly three species while there. Ground squirrels, magpies, and elk. Lots and lots of elk. Dozens of them. So you’re gonna get some elk photos this week. I hope you like them.
Bonus Photo: Weird Elk
This is one weird looking elk, I have to say. It looks more like a llama than an elk. That it’s losing its winter coat doesn’t help with the sad, pathetic look. I’m sure it’s fine though. I don’t think that’s mange or CWD or anything. Most of the elk this weekend were shedding off it’s winter coats. Still, makes for one weird photograph.
Bonus Photo: Whassat?
It’s been a productive weekend so far. I don’t know if I will go out tomorrow at the crack of dawn like today. I’m wiped out, have a migraine, and have been so busy packing for the impending move (6 blocks away) that I should probably stay in and get some work done on a few side projects. I really like the weekend ritual of heading out in search of good photos, though. I feel more in touch with nature than I have in years. I sometimes think that giving up on the biology field did some damage to my soul that is taking a very long time to heal.
Even if I don’t go out tomorrow, the coming week is going to have some absolutely great images. This is one of the lesser ones. I try not to post the really good ones on the weekend because a lot fewer people read this site over the weekend. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
Daily Photo: Tree mycoid
Exploding shrooms! These aren’t nearly as visually interesting as the photo I posted yesterday, but it’s like I said. Last weekend was a near total bust on the photography front.
I’m thinking of driving up to Rocky Mountain National Park early Saturday morning. If I can convince Sarah to get up with me anyway. She can sleep on the drive, which is about an hour. There’s a lot of big wildlife up there, and I think that would be fun to get some shots of with the new lens.
More likely though, I’ll stay home all weekend packing.
Daily Photo: Stacked mushrooms
It’s a return of the old favorite! Mycoids! I’m thinking about giving this one the old fashioned Roundbottom treatment. Sneak some eyeballs in there in the folds, maybe. Give it some stalked eyeballs and a mouth and make it some kind of mimic. Lots of possibilities. I really do have a slightly unhealthy fascination with turning mushrooms into creepy “other” things. When you think about it, with them being neither animal nor plant, but something in between, they’re already somewhat creepy. This is the first macro shot I’ve really posted that I didn’t take with my 35mm macro lens, but instead was taken with the macro mode on the 70-300mm lens. I’m pretty pleased with it’s quality, but I think I’m going to need to get a really small tripod for the insect work.
Daily Photo: Another hatch
This is not the same family as before. For one, the goslings are much older. They’re still pretty cute though. Right now, everywhere I go, I see families of geese. It seems like they almost always have four to five goslings in their hatches.
What I particularly like about this shot is the way the water looks like chiseled glass, or paint on a canvas. That’s not post. That’s really how the water turned out. A little bit of choppiness and wind seems to have a neat effect.
Daily Photo: Mystery Bird
Not a great photo, thanks to the reeds between me and the subject, and the dim morning light. I’m not even sure what this bird is. Stork? Pelican? Something else? It was freaking huge, and I was really hoping to get a full frame shot of it, but it saw me creeping up and gently swam out into the middle of the lake. I am thinking about buying a canoe.
Daily Photo: Buzzard
This weekend was a bust for photography. I’ve been trying to branch out and explore other natural areas in town. The side effect of this is, I don’t know where the animals are, or even if they’re out there. On both Saturday and Sunday, it was also very, very cold and windy, so I think those conditions added to my failure to find much of anything mobile to capture.
These guys are everywhere in the northern part of town. I see them roosting just a few blocks away from where i live. They’re a gang, composed of perhaps a dozen individuals, never seen far from one another. While I was out on Sunday, up on the banks of the Poudre looking for herons, they came swooping low overhead, one after another, so I got to try to take plenty of shots at them. This is the one that I thought turned out the best.
