These turtles are remarkably difficult to approach. So this picture will have to just be compositionally and texturally interesting, and not be a super-close-up zoom of the turtle. One of these days, I’m going out in my waders so I can stand in the water and get better shots. It seems like a lot for just a picture for fun, but I don’t want to not do anything a National Geographic photographer would do to get a shot he or she wanted.

Two more days and we leave for Portland. I’ve got to start charging my camera batteries now. I am so excited. I think I’ll spend a whole day in the Japanese gardens, just shooting pretty things.

Very little crop on this one. Turns out the reason I got to stand so close is that I was between this poor thing and its den. Once I backed off, it came running at me, which I found kind of surprising. Words like “rabies” went through my head at first. Also, “camwhore.” But no, he was just headed for his hole in the ground which I hadn’t seen.

So this is the first daily photo in my new joint. I have a lot of unpacking to do. Have a good day, everyone.

The new lens is a pretty darned good macro lens, actually. I guess one upside to being laid off is that I can make my early morning photography expeditions every day of the week now instead of just on the weekends. Maybe I’ll start posting more than one photo a day.

More orioles, because they posed pretty and let me take their picture, so I had to oblige them with posts on the blog. You understand, right?

This would be my perfect blackbird shot if it wasn’t for all the foliage in the way. It’s close though. Veeery close. Also, this poor bird looks pretty beat up. I dunno if he’s old, molting, or what. His colored spots are pretty faded. He was calling out his territory with the best of them though.

This is not cropped, actually. I’m really proud of this one because I really clicked with the animal and found a way to utilize its curiosity to get a good pose without scaring it away. It very much wanted to keep me in sight. If I backed up a bit, it came out of its den looking for me. If I moved too close, it ducked back in. It was like a weird cross-species game of the hokey pokey. And that’s what it’s all about.

I think maybe I spend too much time looking at excel graphs.

There are orioles everywhere out here. I had no idea. As a kid growing up in Kansas, I read about them but they were not native to the area. I was always fascinated by their basket nests that I saw in books. I’d seen the basket nests in the trees this spring for the first time and suspected that they were made by orioles, but it took a park display to prove to me.

The lighting in this one isn’t perfect, but I really liked the pose. And that brilliant orage is such a lovely color. Taken about 20 minutes after dawn.

Let’s start this week off with some hilarity, shall we? (the title of this one just cracks me up)

So I went to Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday morning. When I left the house, it wasn’t my intention, but I couldn’t find the place I was trying to visit (Bobcat Ridge) so rather than turn around and get directions, I kept driving until I hit the road to Estes Park. From there, it was just a 45 minute hair-raising drive up the canyon and into the park.

Estes has some amazing views, but I am not much of a landscape photographer. I’m there for the animals. I saw exactly three species while there. Ground squirrels, magpies, and elk. Lots and lots of elk. Dozens of them. So you’re gonna get some elk photos this week. I hope you like them.

This is one weird looking elk, I have to say. It looks more like a llama than an elk. That it’s losing its winter coat doesn’t help with the sad, pathetic look. I’m sure it’s fine though. I don’t think that’s mange or CWD or anything. Most of the elk this weekend were shedding off it’s winter coats. Still, makes for one weird photograph.
