Skeptical gorilla is skeptical.

Big, beautiful koi fish at Orchid World.

Day 110: Shuttle Launch Trail

05 Apr 2010 | no comments »

At our distance, the launch itself was still impressive, but not photographable.  Here is the shuttle launch contrail after half an hour, just before sunrise, from the driveway of our rental place.

I never thought I would witness a shuttle launch in person. It was one of the high points of a great trip.

Day 109: Family Dining

04 Apr 2010 | no comments »

I’ve just returned from a 5 day excursion with my wife’s family to Orlando, Florida.  I’ve been shooting my daily shots, but am only just now uploading them.  Sorry!

Our first night in Florida, we actually decided to eat at the table. This feat was not repeated for the rest of the trip.

Day 108: iPad Day

My iPad is a thing of joy.  We loves it, precious.

Day 107: Cohere Grand Opening

03 Apr 2010 | no comments »

Yesterday, Cohere, our local coworking center, had their grand opening, and seven of my photos were on display.  They’ll be up until the end of June, in case you want to see them framed and printed.  I’m really happy with how they turned out.  I hope I sell a few of them!

Day 106: April Snow Storm

01 Apr 2010 | no comments »

White-out conditions here in Northern Colorado today.  Can you see my neighbor’s tree?  If you squint hard, you can see it in the corner just barely.  Talk about high-key photography!

Day 105: Mountain Ave. at Dusk

Old Town isn’t really a neighborhood with secrets.  It only looks that way after dark.

Day 104: Moon Through Trees Like Lace

“The trees look like lace on the moon,” she said.

Day 103: Zoomed Street

Today was not a great day.  I’ll just leave it at that.

Day 102: Spring Moon

29 Mar 2010 | no comments »

A shot of the moon, partially cropped, with the new Bigma 50-500mm lens, at full extension.  I’m thinking I should really try shooting the moon with my 1.4x teleconverter attached as well, just to see what we get for magnification then.  I sometimes wish I could get into astrophotography, but it seems expensive and/or a lot of work.  Sticking to wildlife and nature primarily, I think.

Day 101: Grime

28 Mar 2010 | no comments »

When you take macro pictures of everyday objects, you start to realize that everything is filthy and covered in grime.  My iPod headphones being no exception to this rule.

So if you’re a germaphobe, probably best not to look at anything through magnification.  Just a helpful tip for your sanity.

Ankle is still screwed up, so it’s going to be boring crap like this for a while.

Day 100: Cookies and Milk

27 Mar 2010 | no comments »

An evening snack after seeing a movie.  Mmm.

I wanted to do something special and wildlife-y for day 100, but the weather didn’t cooperate and so you get cookies and milk instead. Maybe tomorrow, although my ankle is acting weird so hiking may not be in the cards for me.  My work schedule has really messed up my photography schedule lately.

Day 99: A Good Book and a Cat

26 Mar 2010 | no comments »

We have specific notions about what makes a good night around these parts.  This is pretty much it, much of the time.

Sometimes, it involves video games.

Day 97: March Storm

24 Mar 2010 | no comments »

Magic “gunk-up” picture filter ON!

I’m really running out of ideas when it comes to snow.

Day 96: Birds and Bridges in the Park

23 Mar 2010 | 4 comments »

I had a relaxing and productive morning shooting in Lee Martinez Park this morning before heading off to work at Cohere.   The birds were singing, the air was crisp–spring has sprung, at least until the big snow on Thursday.

I never get tired of taking pictures of even the common birds like robins and magpies.  Even they provide a challenge to the Bigma.  Carrying it around is a challenge in itself.

I cannot for the life of me take shots of birds on the wing with this thing.  I can’t pan and focus simultaneously. I suppose if I just held down the trigger and fired off 40 shots, maybe one of htem would turn out.  I’m still shutter shy a bit, which is weird, because I didn’t shoot much film before going digital.  And my card holds over 500 pictures, so I don’t really need to be sparing.

Tomorrow, I’ll see if I can find an eagle to try the Bigma out on.
