The Sofanauts » The Sofanauts No 3 (Listen to me be a fool)

Once again this week, I appear on Sofanauts, Tony Smith’s SF discussion podcast.  This week, the guests were Gord Sellar, awesome writer and future John W. Campbell Award winner, and Ray Sizemore, a fantastic narrator of podcasts.

I don’t know what it is about being on podcasts that turns me into a raving lunatic, but this week, I spend time explaining why WALL-E is darker than the Dark Knight, why I think the Singularity as a futuristic concept is laughable, and to stick a fork in my career once and for all, I disrespect the science fiction saint Robert Heinlein.

So, if you enjoy listening to me make an utter fool of myself in a relatively entertaining fashion, go take a listen.

We’re listening to it now. I think you sound like the respected peer of this genre and world that the host thinks you are.

Roy Huggins

I’m with you on the singularity and Heinlein. Heinlein was cool but pretty overblown. And the singularity reminds me of those predictive essays from the 50s where they predicted people would replace food with nutrition pills. Maybe you could but why the hell would you want to?

Jeremiah Tolbert

No, Electra! I’m a loose cannon! I’ve gone rogue, and nobody can handle it…

Trying to cultivate an image here…

Roy– yeah, exactly. They always presume that just because they’re into the idea, so will everyone else, and I think that’s presuming far too much.

Electra

:-)
Man, I can’t think of a witty reply to that. I’ll keep your secret safe and maintain your rep, dude.

Roy Huggins

I think many of those guys would think twice if they were facing the real thing, honestly. The idea is so vague at present, I’m not sure exactly what that guy is predicting will happen before 2030 and I’m betting he doesn’t really, either.

I guess I should say that many ideas of the singularity, such as electronically enhanced memory, etc. don’t seem so far-fetched or undesirable to me. I immediately think of Ghost in the Shell when the singularity is mentioned.

Jeremiah Tolbert

Thanks. See, and _now_ when I say crazy stuff, people will just say “oh, he’s faking it to maintain his rep” and they’ll still think I’m cool and funny.

I can have it both ways, muahaha.
