Today’s main post is going to be late. In the excitement to go see the new Star Trek last night, I forgot to write one. I’m still not 100% set on a topic, either. First thing this morning, I’m recording another episode of the Sofanauts with Tony and the gang.
This was taken in broad daylight with a 35mm macro lens. To get a black background like that is pretty easy. You simply need to increase your aperture really high, like 11 or 16. This will increase your depth of field, which you need as much as you can get when you’re really, really close with a 1:1 macro lens. It also means you need a lot more light to get a good exposure so I tend to use flash when shooting macro. But if you already have a lot of light on a sunny day, you can still get a mood. Remember, there’s no such thing as the “right” exposure beyond what exposure conveys the mood you want.
