I’m sorry

The Fundable project from yesterday is offensive to people.  It felt a little crass, but I’d discussed the idea before and people said that they would support it, so I thought I would give it a try.  I didn’t think that the idea itself would anger anyone.  I’m sorry.  I’ve cancelled it.  If I want to go to Yellowstone to shoot, I’ll see if I can sell some prints over time to pay for it instead.

offensive? fools. People raised money to send Scalzi to the Creation Museum, after all. It wasn’t a new business model, just a rare one.

Sorry the intertubes seem to be against you. I can’t imagine why.

Offensive?!!! Bullshit! Those Cock gobblers don’t know the meaning of being offended. All they have to do is ignore it, and if they’ve been on the internet this long and not learned to ignore the stuff that offends them then those butt monkeys can happily get bent out of shape about this comment too.

Offensive? Yeah, I’ll admit that it was little better than panhandling, but worse have done it for less. At least you offered to return with high quality prints for your donors, instead of asking for donations to cover your $30k credit card debt after shopping for clothes and offering nothing in return…

Oh Noes! Does this mean because I was slowpokey I don’t get to pay for some mysterious future Yellowstone greatness? Gah!

Yeah, I agree with the other folks commenting here: I don’t at all see what’s offensive about it. Sure, some people may not approve, but that’s not “offensive”. And it’s not even as though you were demanding money: it was completely optional and quite easy for people to ignore if they didn’t like it.

I actually thought it was a decent idea.

    6. I went and spent some time on your flicker pages after you put this up yesterday, and I found myself very sad about the whole thing.

Once upon a time, artists could count on patrons to support them — a great deal of famous art would not exist otherwise. These days when people must work so hard just to survive (if they have work at all) we risk, I think, art of all kinds falling by the wayside. I love the opportunities I get to support people who add value to the world, be it in drawing, painting, photos, or writing, any kind of way. It’s amazing that little monies can come together to make such a huge difference for people, it validates a positive view of humanity.

I guess that’s a view a lot of people don’t have any more.

I can’t say that I saw the post, but I infer from the comments that you asked folks to help fund a trip to Yellowstone to take pictures. I don’t know if I’m old or cynical, but anyone finding offense with that simply isn’t worth your trouble. You take amazing pictures, many of which are freely viewable of flickr. If I had the money I’d totally kick in for you, because you do give back. If all the photos and experience you had would simply disappear, or would only be sold for profit I could maybe see it, but as near as I can tell you share both. For free.

I understand your decision, but it is sad that you had to make it.

    8. Norm says:

Really? Offensive? Your pictures rock. I’ll chuck in a few bucks if anything to piss off the people offended by this.

    9. cgeye says:

It was a fair deal, with even the overage donated well. Nothing offensive about it. You asked for patrons, fair and square, for a specific project. Microlending should not discriminate; the quality of the effort’s what’s being judged.

You got hit by griefers, who aren’t worth the pixels to read.

    10. Well, I’m going to be redecorating soon and have been wanting some Wyoming nature photos on the walls, so I’m going to hit you up for this one way or another. Still drives me nuts that frames usually cost more than the actual pictures inside them…
