I know a writer who's never gotten a rejection letter: Scott Lynch, the author of 'Lies of Locke Lamora'.

Here's the thing, though. He never submitted his work. He posted some of his work on an online forum for critique, and someone browsing through the place was either his agent or publisher (I don't remember which), and they wanted the story as soon as he showed them the complete first chapter.

That said, I almost wonder if getting the book around to a bunch of agents/publishers (I'm part of the 'get an agent' camp) would be better for you, rather than taking the first thing you see.

Great post, with inspiring anecdotes, most of which I had never heard or read before. And it reminded me I need to clean up a flash story to submit to EscapePod.

Good blog post. Writers need to be reminded of these things.

Brandon has been one of my inspirations since Elantris sold to TOR. Jay Lake is another inspiration: he had about 150 rejections before making his first pro sale, and over 1200 rejections total in his career.

Persistence pays off.

What about that phantom of rejection letters, the cold stone silence of rejection-by-proxy (i.e., no response at all)?

wonderful post! my favorite rejection story: When Norman Maclean first submitted A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT, collection of brilliant short stories about the American West written in gin-clear prose, he received a note that read: “These stories have trees in them.”
