Last Saturday, I was taking photos of the herd of bull elk I like to follow around when suddenly I heard something heavy land on the roof of my car. I was at the base of a cliff. “Landslide?” I muttered. I waited for another sound, for the crushing rocks.

None came.

There was a brief fluttering, and a large black and white magpie landed on the post right outside my passenger side window. He preened and tilted, trying to see if there was any food in my car. While he did so, I refocused and started snapping shots. Nervous as hell that he would fly away, or I would have framed this one a bit better and not cut off the feathers on the right side of the frame.

While I was shooting, it began to call out in a dozen different sounds, other bird calls, and what I swear was a cellphone ring tone. I got around a dozen shots, and then it was gone.

Comcast Treated Me Right

Posted on:

I’m in the process of cutting what bills I can.  Cable television is one of those things that we consider a luxury, not really necessary to survival.  We watch a lot of TV via services like Hulu now anyway.

So I called Comcast and after a few notices about how I shouldn’t worry about the digital conversion and a couple of menu options,  I got a very courteous support person.  I told her I wanted to cancel my TV portion of my package but keep the internet.

Sir, may I ask why?”

Well, unfortunately, I was laid off from my job on Friday, and I need to cut costs as best I can.”

I’m so sorry to hear that,” she said, sounding really quite genuine.   She looked at my account and made a suggestion that I should  go to a basic package which would be about $16 a month.

How much of a total savings would that be, I’m kind of bad at math while on the phone,” I said.

One moment,” she answered.  But before should could give me the total, she added, “You’ve been a good Comcast customer.  I’m going to lower your high speed to $19.95, but only for six months.  So your total bill would be $40.93.”

Thank you so much,” I said.  “Hopefully I will find a new job in the next six months.”

I know it’s hard out there,” she said. Then we proceeded to have a chat about her son-in-law looking for a job as well, and then she told me that I really should watch American Idol tonight, and seemed excited that she had saved me the ability to do so.  I laughed politely and thanked her.

The first part was nice, nothing unusual. Just a retention specialist doing her job.  But when she took down my high speed internet to $19.95 for 6 months, just to help me out, that’s where I was impressed.  All told, my cable bill went from $106.23  to $40.93, for a savings of  $65.30  for the next six months.  And we just lose some TV channels we weren’t watching much of  anyway.

Thanks, Comcast.  You’ve made my day a lot better by having done this. I appreciate it, and if you folks would just stop messing with BitTorrent traffic, you would have a lifelong customer.

I took this one the same time I took my most popular photography of all time. Not quite as amazing, but still pretty pleasing to me. Wish some of the highlights weren’t blown out but what are you doing to do?

I went and bought this photography market book yesterday. While I was waiting in the car for Sarah, I thumbed through it and I was suddenly overwhelmed with the Fear. I know the Fear well. As a writer who sends his work out to magazines in the slush, it’s the same Fear. Fear of rejection, of failure, or putting your work out their and being deemed not good enough.

My goal is going to be to work up to 1 pitch per day. I don’t know if I have the photographs necessary to pitch or not, but I’m going to try. What the hell, right? I’m also going to start entering contests and maybe putting together a series for a gallery show.

Dr. Roundbottom will be coming back soon. Get ready.

Now this is interesting behavior. I’ve seen it a couple of times now, and while this isn’t an interesting photo in and of itself, it might be interesting scientifically. Those are three magpies all walking around on the elk, picking at–not sure what. Various parasites? Hard to believe parasites can live at this altitude, but I imagine they do on the nice warm blood of elks.

So is their a communal relationship between magpies and elks? I’ve not seen behavior like this outside of Africa. Fascinating. I really need to see if anyone’s done a paper about this.

My 10 Second Impression of Fringe

My super-quick impression of the TV show Fringe:

SHOW INTRO

Ridiculous and bad science premise  results in someone being gorily murdered, often involving slime and/or blood.

CREDITS roll.

OLIVIA

(stares emotionlessly)

WALTER BISHOP

Something off the wall, either grossly inappropriate or involving food, while examing some grotesque CG creature or corpse.

(The audience laughs and shakes their heads).

PETER BISHOP

(smirks mysteriously)

THE END

And yet I love this show.  I want to start a Doctor Walter “Crazy Motherfucker” Bishop fanclub.

Still, the most recent episode had some painfully bad science.  The cold is caused by a virus.  Viruses are not cells.  Come on, Fringe, that’s first-year bio stuff.  Don’t embarass me like that again. Or I might just have to download Walter highlight reels instead of actually watching your show.

iPhones and SF

Has anyone thought about trying to build an iPhone application that is a delivery method for an e-zine? Solely distributed as an iPhone/iTouch app?  What kind of fiction would work best when read solely on an iPhone/Touch?  What kind of features would an app need to be an effective e-reader for short fiction?  These are questions I am asking myself tonight.

I’ve spent some time this weekend thinking about writer/photographer useful applications that I could develop for the iPhone.  I’ve got a slowly growing list. Now I just need to learn Objective C.  Well, and C in general.  And programming in general.

Okay, so I am not the best guy for this.  I should find a developer and go into business with them.

Lest I Focus Solely on the Negative, And, Project PhotoRoadTrip

I’ve veering into negative blogging territory lately, so I think it would be wise of me to make a post talking about the positive things that have happened recently to remind myself that life isn’t all bad.

  • 7 of 10 photos submitted to iStockPhoto this past week were accepted.  That’s a new record for me.  Of the three rejected, I somewhat expected it might happen.  I’m slowly learning how to shoot for them. I guess I have more time to pursue this now too!
  • My photo Clouds of FootHills I on Flickr reached a high of #25 on Flickr Explore for the day.  It’s moved all over the place, but seeing it hit the Flickr Explore front page was a highlight of my photography career so far.  Thanks to those of you who gave the photo love.  It currently has 911 views, 108 favorites, and 63 comments.  It’s by far the most popular thing I have ever shot.  And I thought I couldn’t shoot landscape photography.
  • I sold a story a little while back.  I don’t think I’m allowed to say which and for what, but I will let you know when I can.  It is nice to know that when I put my mind to it, I can still be a writer. Maybe I will get more writing done thanks to my unemployment status!
  • The outpouring of help from my friends, especially you guys on Twitter, has been nothing short of astounding.  Thank you.  It’s times like this that you realize how good your friends really are.

I’m slowly pulling myself out of my slump and setting my goals, sketching out projects and tasks, and thinking about where I want to go and how I want to get there.  My goal of professional travel photographer is certainly going to have to take a back-seat to something more practical. And then there’s this:

ProjectPhotoRoadTrip

I think I’m a pretty decent photographer at this point.  I think I write pretty well too.  I have all this time on my hands suddenly and I was thinking that maybe I could put it to you all to fund a little project I’m contemplating.

I’m thinking about taking 2 weeks and taking a road trip somewhere–maybe the Southwest?  Arizona, New Mexico.  Some place where it’s not freezing cold right now, and some place that offers interesting opportunities for photography.  I’ll stay off the interstate and use the old highway system, looking for unusual sights and vistas along the way.

I’m thinking of launching a Fundable project.  I’ll budget it all out very carefully and post a transparent accounting of what money I need and why.  In return for sponsoring me, I will post daily blog updates, interviews with people I meet on the road, portraits of said people, landscape photos, and anything else that I can manage.  I will write and document a travelogue in the way that only I can.     Donors  above a certain minimum amount will receive a print of their choice from the product’s photographic results.  And if that’s not enough, then maybe I can offer to pay everyone back once I’m gainfully employed again.   Photo Essay, NPR style.

I’m not sold on the Southwest.  I’d like to poll you all for your opinions.  Remember that I live in Colorado, so where I go should be within 2–3 days driving distance at most, and it should probably be some place not covered in snow and ice in February/March.  Or you could be masochistic and command me to go to Yellowstone.  There would be amazing photo opportunities, I will just freeze to death.  It’s all good.

What do you think?  Crazy enough to work?  Interesting in seeing what I can do?  Share your thoughts. Later, maybe, I’ll ask you to open your wallets.
