Turns out I had another bird in the hopper. This is my favorite bop (bird of prey). These are the most common where I grew up in Kansas. I once attempted to count the number of hawks I saw on three hour drive across part of Kansas. I gave up when the number went over 100.

You might picture Kansas as a land of farms and creationists. But in my mind, it’s a fossil-rich land of wildlife that hasn’t been stamped out by development.

I’m headed out there to work out of my Mom’s for a week in September, and am stopping along the way on the weekend to do research for my books.
