Photo: rocky outcrop with stones
I’ve become less enamored with the overly extreme HDR effect so on this photo I’ve redone it and tried to bring it back into something not quite so unreal. I really love this shot, but the light just wasn’t great in a regular shot. I couldn’t expose everything equally. So it was a great candidate for some HDR love. What do you think? Still too unreal, or just right?

KNew about some, others I did not. Custom write panels could come in handy.

Not my favorite photographer but surely I can learn something from her.

Wow, Jean-Claude Van Damme is really, really crazy.
Photo: Like Something Out of Myst No.2
I discovered a new park up the Poudre Canyon yesterday. I had no idea it existed, and I’m thrilled to have found it because there were some really fantastic HDR opportunities up there. Among them, this little compound.
Should I tell you want it really is? How about you guess and later on I’ll tell you what this really is. I swear I’ve seen this as a level in a video game at some point, and the HDR effect just adds to that illusion.
PS: Click through and view the large version of this. The small size loses a lot of the awesome detail.
Roundbottom Memberships On Sale
The Roundbottom Foundation memberships (including a variety of things including a photonic print) are now on sale for $30 a piece. You can find out more about this great Holiday gift here.
I had a productive weekend photographically speaking. Some interesting photos pushing a new technique I’ve not really tried much before. Some say that HDR is a cheat and is no substitute for real photography, but I just consider it another tool in my possible toolbox.
I’ve been doing a lot of photography-related reading lately. I went to the library on Friday and spent a couple of hours looking for inspiration in the stacks. I didn’t really find anything, but on Saturday, we had to buy some Christmas presents for the nieces at Barnes & Noble and while there, I browsed a few more books. These were much enlightening.
The big thing I am focusing on right now is really truly learning how exposure works and how to control it. Most of my photos are not exposed correctly in camera. It seems pretty basic, I know, but this is my focus right now. I have to get the basics down before I can really advance my skills much further.

I guess my blog is really just a photoblog with a side order of web design links lately. I’ve got a list of posts I’d like to write some day when I have the time, but those will have to wait and you will have to make do with the pictures.
I took a bunch of fall photos a few weeks ago thinking that I might need them for some kind of project. The trees are all bare now and this photo just makes me wistful for summer.
I almost bought a ticket to Portland for the weekend today, for less than $200. But I felt bad about the idea of going without Sarah, who has weekend obligations. I’ll be coming out there often enough around February/March when I begin the process of relocating though.

My mushroom fascination continues. You can imagine what this blog will look like next fall after we’ve moved to Portland. It will be mushroom central around here.
I was surprised to see these mushrooms this late in the year. They are dried out though, and not really living organisms at this point. They’re like the mushroom equivalent of leaves I suppose. Clinging to the bark that is both their birthplace and their grave.
I just love the intricate curls and curves in these. The organic shape of a mushroom is ineffable to me.
Dr. Roundbottom Limited Editon Prints Now $65
Hello, good people! Here’s the skinny. I’ve lowered the prices of my limited edition Dr. Roundbottom prints from $125 to $65 a piece. That’s a 16“x20” print on high quality paper, suitable for framing, etc. Signed and numbered. Only 10 of each image available.
If you’re looking for a bargain on a membership kit, never fear. I have some stock I need to try to get rid of before the end of the year, so I’ll be offering a discount on membership kits for a subset of the images next week.
I’m thinking of opening a low-cost general prints store for my nature photography as well. Let me know if such a thing interests you and it might motivate me to actually do it.
Before the end of the year, I hope to hone down the pictures I have taken in the last several years to a tight portfolio of just the best work. Just in case National Geographic comes calling, hah hah!
Oh, and if you would be so kind as to share the word about my reduced prices, I would be grateful. Have a lovely evening, dear readers.
