My first Jeremiad column has gone live over at Fantasy. In it, I challenge the nature of the geek heirarchy and the ridiculousness of geeks picking on other geeks over their particular intellectual kinks. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the well-reasoned commentary. I’ve always found it interesting how Sjöberg’s Geek Hierarchy started out as “just a harmless joke” and ended up being endlessly parroted as a some Universal Truth among less-secure geeks. Probably the main reason for this is some people (deliberately?) misinterpret the chart as those on the bottom being “lamer than” instead of “geekier than.”
Furry fandom has gotten a lot of unwarranted flak in recent years from geeks who ought to know better. On the bright side, though, there are geeks out there who know how to Play Well With Others.
