Actually they are the exact same thing.
I posted yesterday to the LJ side but maybe you didn’t see that.
The Japanese version is shishi — the chinese is foo dog — but they are both Buddha temple guardians (originally) which began life from India depictions and who eventually transformed from dogs to lions because as symbols they were adopted by the wealthy. What you are looking at is a male foo dog. They protect against negativity.
